Dictation for students on Mac
Updated 12 October 2026
Dictation lets you draft essays, notes and dissertations by speaking: hold a key, say your argument out loud, and the text appears wherever your cursor is, in Pages, Word, Notion or a browser. Kords is free to start, works on your Mac, and leaves your words as you said them.
Why speak your first draft
Most people can explain an idea out loud far more easily than they can write it. Dictating a first draft gets past the blank page, keeps your own voice, and is often much faster than typing. You then edit the draft, which is where the writing improves.
How to draft an essay by voice
- Plan the headings by typing. Write the question and a heading for each section.
- Talk through one section at a time. Click under a heading, hold your dictation key and explain the point as if you were telling a friend.
- Lock it on for long stretches. Double-tap your shortcut to keep recording hands-free, then press once to finish.
- Edit by reading it back. Read the draft aloud, then fix the wording and the structure.
- Type the exact parts. Quotes, equations and references are usually quicker to type.
What to dictate and what to type
| Dictate | Type |
|---|---|
| First drafts of paragraphs and sections | Direct quotes and page numbers |
| Your argument, talked through | Equations and symbols |
| Reflective notes and lab write-ups | References and bibliographies |
| Emails to tutors and supervisors | Anything that must be exactly right |
Teach it your subject
Names and specialist words are where dictation slips most. Add author names, module vocabulary and technical terms to the Kords dictionary once, and they are written your way from then on.
Free to start
Kords is free to download. On-device dictation is unlimited and needs no card, and you get about 2,000 Cloud words a week. Paid plans are optional.
Check your university's rules on AI
Dictation is a way of typing, but some courses limit AI help with writing, and you are responsible for following them. On-device dictation and Word for word do not reword what you said. Kords' optional Voices use an AI model to change the tone of your text, so leave them off if your course restricts AI.
What Kords is not
Kords turns your speech into text at your cursor. It is not a tool for transcribing a recorded lecture, and it only listens while you hold your shortcut. Find a quiet room: dictation needs you to speak out loud.
Questions people ask
