British English dictation for Mac
Updated 12 October 2026
For British English dictation on a Mac, set your Mac's language to English (UK) and region to United Kingdom, then dictate. Kords follows your Mac's language and region, and in Cloud mode asks for British spelling and pound signs, so “colour” and “£6.99” come out as you would write them.
How to set up British English dictation
- Open System Settings, then General, then Language & Region.
- Put English (UK) at the top of your preferred languages and set Region to United Kingdom.
- Dictate as normal. Kords reads your Mac's language and region.
What changes
- Spelling: colour, organise and licence rather than color, organize and license.
- Currency: “six ninety-nine” becomes £6.99, not $6.99.
- Recognition: on-device recognition uses the language and region your Mac is set to.
Names and places
Place names and surnames are where dictation slips most, whether it is Cheltenham or Siobhán. Add them once to the Kords dictionary and they are written your way from then on. You can also add a “sounds like” hint for names that are spelled very differently from how they sound.
Made in the UK
Kords is made by Launchcore Ltd, a company registered in the United Kingdom, and its plans are priced in pounds sterling. See about Kords.
Questions people ask
Does Mac dictation support British English?
Yes. Add English (UK) in System Settings, General, Language and Region and dictate in it. Apple Dictation and Kords both follow the language and region you set.
How do I get pound signs instead of dollar signs?
Set your Mac's region to United Kingdom. In Kords' Cloud mode this also asks for pounds, so a spoken price is written with a pound sign.
Can Kords learn names it keeps getting wrong?
Yes. Add the name to the Kords dictionary, and a sounds-like hint if needed, and it is written that way from then on.
